Trieste is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, neighbouring Slovenia and Croatia, and a hot pot of culture. An unfairly overlooked destination in Italy due to other popular contenders, much to our delight we have the city to ourselves. With cuisine, culture, and castles, the city has much to brag about. The towering Dolomites set a magical backdrop behind the city, and the azure Adriatic Sea extends across the horizon. The city’s medieval center brims with character, originally one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy, and later earned its name as a literature and music hub at the end of the 19th century. Just outside the city is Miramare Castle, the romantic dwelling of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota of Mexico that boasts extensive grounds that you can walk amongst. Some of the rooms in the castle are on show; get a taste of how the Emperor lived by viewing his chambers, the guests rooms and the Duke’s apartment.
